Freshers Foodie Tip #3 - Store cupboard essentials

One of the most important bits of advice is, on your first big shop it to stock up on the basics!

If you’re lucky enough to convince your rents to do your first big shop at uni (and even if you aren't), DON’T just put alcohol in the trolley (although essential), also make sure you do some bulk buying of store cupboard essentials, that way they’ll be in the back of your cupboard for the rest of term and it works out much cheaper in the long run!

For example:

GIANT bags of pasta – most supermarkets sell giant bags. These are much better value for money! Buy it now while your parents are paying, or at the very least while you have a car to get it home in!

Multipacks – you could just buy one tin of tuna- after all, you’re not going to be eating one a day for the next week (that will certainly stop you pulling during Freshers!) -  but just think how happy you’ll be two weeks down the line when you’re hungry thinking there’s nothing to put in a sandwich...and then you remember the tin of tuna in the back of the cupboard!!!

Condiments – everyone needs salt, pepper, ketchup, vinegar etc. Grab these now, that way you won’t have to worry later. They last a lot longer than you think as well!

Spices – you may not be a curry connoisseur but at some point you’re going to want to spice up your life, and your food, a good spice rack is ESSENTIAL to turn leftover half eaten food in the fridge into a gourmet meal.

Flour and sugar – you never know when these will come in handy! Maybe you fancy baking some Halloween cakes for a hall party? Maybe without mum and dad you forgot it was Pancake Day...until now! Thank God you bought these in your first shop or you’d be sad!
